Splitting sweet potato vines is an easy and inexpensive way to propagate new vines. Spring is the best time to split the sweet potatoes. Dig up tubers shoots are 1 to 2 inches. Discard any rotten spots or tubers. Cut the tubers into chunks. Each chunk should contain at least one eye. Plant the chunks about an inch deep, with about 3 feet between each tuber. Sweet potatoes grow well in direct sunlight with moist, never soggy soil.
